The first glimpse of a herd of bison (buffalo)-- usually in the Hayden or Lamar Valleys, at Yellowstone-- is truly a thrill.

Be sensible about safety, when viewing bison: the Canyon Visitor Center has a special exhibit about bison that includes examples of astonishing foolhardiness: people have even posed small children on top of bison for photos (with disastrous results.)

And remember, for the animals' well-being: don't crowd in, for your photo op; keep 25 yards away.
