Hawaii is a magnet for families and is pulling them from farther and farther east these days, with more direct flights. Don't expect to find the all-inclusives of the Caribbean, though. Instead, set your sights on: luxury resorts with special programs and features for kids; Waikiki (-busy, yes, but lots of fun) ; or go the condo-rental route so popular with families.
Some starter suggestions:
•Oahu: Waikiki Beach: many family-friendly hotels including suites and affordable choices; sheltered beach; surf lessons for kids; base camp for fun outings
• Maui: Ka'anapali Beach Hotel: a top pick by FamilyFun Magazine; good value; creative kids' programs.
• The Big Island: Hilton Waikoloa Village - With 65 acres on the Kohala Coast, the Hilton Waikoloa Village has pools galore, waterfalls, grottos, slides; salt-water lagoon with water-toys and snorkeling (-sea turtles swim in); and -- a novelty kids love-- a monorail and canal-boats to get around the large grounds.
• Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa: 50 acres, in the southeast of the Garden Island; known for its landscaped pools, ponds, lagoons. (See Top Things to do on Kauai.)
