New York Winter Vacation Ideas

Below are suggestions for several regions, for winter vacation getaways for families in the New York area.

Ski Getaways

New York is a big state, with two "upstate" mountain ranges that offer ski resorts -- the Catskills and the Adirondacks-- plus some smaller slopes as well. Have a look at ski resorts in New York State.

Catskills Winter Ideas:

Only a hundred miles from New York City, the Catskills Mountains have been a popular getaway for family resorts for many decades, especially in summer-time. Some properties offer winter vacations too.

  • Rocking Horse Ranch Resort
    This resort has 500 acres located ninety minutes from New York City, and all inclusive pricing for meals and activities. Winter fun includes skiing, tubing, ice skating, and sleigh rides.

  • Mohonk Mountain House
    Ninety miles north of New York City, this lakeside "Victorian castle" has 1200 acres and dates from an era of upscale mountain lodges. Activities include cross-country skiing on miles of trails, snowshoeing, snow-tubing, and ice-skating parties in the Victoria Pavilion.

  • Hudson Valley Resort & Spa
    This modern-looking four-season resort has 400 acres in the Shawangunk Mountains. Winter activities include snow tubing, cross-country skiing, outdoor ice skating.
  • River Run B&B
    Built at the turn of the century in Victorian style, this resort offers "relaxed comfort" on Main Street in the historic village of Fleischmanns, and is a family-friendly B&B. Belleayre Mountain is just two miles away, for skiing.

Lake George Area:

Six Flags Great Escape Lodge and Indoor Water Park
This resort and its indoor water park are open year-round, even when the Six Flags theme park across the street is closed. Location is in the Lake George area, three to four hours from NYC.

Upstate New York:

Hull-O Family Farm Vacations
Location of this family farm is ann hour south of Albany. Guests can participate (or not) in the daily life of a working dairy farm: milk cows, collect eggs, feed pigs... Visitors stay in private guest-houses, and home-cooked dinners and breakfast are included in the rates.

Finger Lakes:
A. C. Button's B&B
Families are welcome at this working farm in western NY state, and guests can feed calves and lambs, watch milking, etc. Breakfast is served in a large farmhouse that has cozy guest rooms, and a hayloft room has toys for kids. Guests can go skiing nearby.

Out-of-State but Within 3 to 4 Hours of New York City:

Smugglers Notch, Vermont
"A winter vacation at Smuggs is the most fun your children will ever have - we guarantee it." Snow season activities at this family resort include skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, ice skating, tube sliding, sleigh rides, a heated pool, bonfires, fireworks, games nights, an indoor FunZone, and two Teen clubs.

Hershey PA:
3 hours from New York City and near Amish country, "Chocolate Town USA" welcomes families. The main attraction, Hersheypark amusement park, is closed for the winter except during December when it's open as "Christmas Candyland". Hershey PA also offers the classic Hotel Hershey (with kids club, and a Chocolate Spa), the family-friendly Hershey Lodge, and several chocolate-themed attractions.
