Page is a budget-friendly town with lots of nearby recreation and sightseeing. Some good choices for families:

Glen Canyon Dam: drop into the Carl Hayden Visitor Center, take a free tour of the massive dam that created Lake Powell.

Powell Museum: a small but fun museum; exhibits range from dinosaurs to vintage dioramas of John Powell's river trip down the Grand Canyon in 1869.

• Local sightseeing: Upper and Lower Antelope Slot Canyons are famously beautiful; Rainbow Bridge National Monument is the "world's largest known natural bridge"

• Houseboating on Lake Powell: a popular family vacation
