Not to be confused with Monument Valley! This is a federal-government National Monument (part of the National Park system), within Navajo land; no fees are charged, to visit or camp. Visitors stroll down a paved walkway-- past native plants with signs describing traditional uses --to a lookout with views across a scenic valley to the Betatakin/Talastima cliff dwellings, built in the 13th century.
Free guided tours to the cliff dwellings leave daily in summer with a ranger; the 5-mile round-trip takes 3-5 hours. Note that elevation starts at 7300 feet, and that visitors can hike only with a guide; a longer backcountry hike can also be made to Keet Seel. But most visitors simply enjoy the walk to the overlook, about a mile round-trip.
