Lake Powell is amazing for its scenic beauty: picture a stunning red-rock canyon; then flood it nearly to the top. Boats on Lake Powell are actually floating near the top of Glen Canyon, with red and pink sandstone reflected in the man-made lake.
The side canyons are especially beautiful and can be explored by kayak or motorboat. (See a Lake Powell photo gallery.)
Lake Powell is part of the 1-million acre Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, (also part of the National Park Service); the lake has nearly 2000 miles of shore, and took 18 years to fully fill, after the dam was completed in 1963. Page AZ is a major access point for the Lake.
