Two of these imposing winged boars stand outside the entrance area for Hogwarts Castle. According to one fan site -- (the Harry Potter Lexicon, which lists every detail imaginable about Hogwarts Castle and more) -- Professor McGonagall animated these statues to fight in the Battle of Hogwarts, using a Piertotum Locomotor spell.
