Get Blog Updates Automatically
- Keep Updated through an RSS Feed

By Teresa Plowright, About.com

"RSS Feeds" are a handy way to get notified when new content is posted on a blog you like. ("RSS" stands for "Really Simple Syndication", a way for blogs to be distributed easily to an audience. Read more about RSS Explained; or just forge ahead below and set up your RSS feeds).

Two Steps

First, you'll need to get an RSS Reader. After that, it's easy to sign up for RSS "Feeds" for your favorite blogs.

#1: Get a (Free) RSS Reader

One easy option is to simply sign up for a free Google RSS Reader. After sign-up, you'll just need to head to your very own Google Reader Page, and check what's new every day (or even every hour) at your favorite blogs.

Note, however, that the Google Reader is an online "web-based" reader: you do need to navigate to that particular page in your browser for it to work.

An alternative is to have a "desktop" RSS Reader, that resides on your own computer like any other application. The Reader can be set to run at Startup, or to be available by a quick click on a shortcut icon.

For example: Omea Reader is a free "desktop" RSS Reader, one of several Free RSS Readers recommended by About.com's Guide for Email.

Once you have your RSS Reader, it's time to:

#2: Sign Up for RSS at Your Favorite Blogs

At any blog you like, you should easily find a sign-up link for an RSS feed: bloggers want to distribute their material, and RSS is the common way to do so.

At About.com blogs, for instance, every blog post has a link for RSS just under the Subject line: click it, and then click "Add to Google" if you have the Google Reader. (Or click "add to My Yahoo", or "My AOL", if using those RSS Readers.)

For example, here is the RSS signup page at Family Vacations.

At other sites, you might see a link such as "Subscribe to Our Feed", which is an invitation to sign up for RSS updates.

Meanwhile, if you're using an application such as Omea Reader, you only need to enter the URL for the web site with the blog you like, and the Reader will find and sign up for the RSS feed.
