Even though the temperatures get hot hot hot, summer's still the busiest season for family vacations in the Southeast US states. Many of these families live in the region, and travel to cooler temperatures in the mountains or on the shores.

South Carolina is the #2 state for tourism after Florida, and Myrtle Beach is a major draw, with a 60-mile stretch of beaches and several amusement park attractions. Stone Mountain, in Georgia is another big name, with woods and lakes; giant "stone mountain" outcrop, famously sculpted; and fun such as sky ride and laser light show.

Sea-side getaways include Outer Banks NC and Gulf Shores Alabama... Families seeking resorts can try Hilton Head (which has a Disney resort, among others), or water park resorts, or all inclusive Earthshine Mountain Lodge, near Asheville, with unusual fun such as pioneer activities, zip line, high ropes.

For sightseeing ideas mixing fun plus history, see American South Road Trip, a guest article starting in Montgomery and ending in Memphis. Another guest article praises family attractions in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Don't forget that in summer-time indoor attractions -- such as IMAX theaters-- are blessedly air-conditioned! - continue to Midwest US
