DC and VA are tops for history and sightseeing but also have water parks, and coasters such as this "floorless diving coaster" that's dangled these riders in the air.

Washington DC offers so much sightseeing, it's hard to know where to start. Several About.com Guides have put together lists of Top Things to Do, and Best Places to Go with Kids.

Meanwhile, in Virginia, Colonial Williamsburg is another top family destination. In beautifully restored areas, kids can learn -- in a fun way-- through "living history": actors and volunteers bring the Revolutionary years to life. Watch blacksmiths and wigmakers; ride in carriages; listen to patriots talk about revolution...

For more history, add on side trips to Jamestown and Yorktown in the "Historic Triangle". And for some light relief: head to Busch Gardens Williamsburg theme park, with terrific roller coasters, Sesame Street Forest of Fun, Europe theming; Water Country USA water park is nearby.

Also in Virginia is the unique resort, The Homestead, set on 3000 acres, and dating back to 1766. Summer activities include horseback riding, mountain biking, fly fishing sporting clays and falconry.
