To start with Hershey PA, "Chocolate Town USA": over a hundred years ago, chocolate tycoon Milton Hershey built an amusement park for his employees. Today, that's Hersheypark, a theme park with thrill coasters, little-kid fun, and in summer, a Boardwalk area with water slides, wave pool, surfing, lazy river float. Hershey PA has other attractions too, plus Hershey Lodge and the classic Hotel Hershey, with kids club; location is near Harrisburg, in the Amish area of PA.
Another great theme park for families is Sesame Place, 30 minutes from Phillie, 90 minutes from New York City; ideal age is two to seven years old.
Pennsylvania also offers some outstanding resorts with giant properties, that offer hiking, rock-climbing, horse-riding, archery... Several are in the Poconos area, which also has a Great Wolf Lodge with giant indoor water park.
For another outdoorsy option, consider Deer Valley Family Camp: with 742 acres of woods, a lake for summer watersports, and lots of activities including horse-riding. Families can stay in the lodge, or in cottages or cabins; meals are in the lakeside dining hall.
