Ohio has some very cool state park resorts that are within easy driving range of cities in southern MI and western PA as well as within OH. Salt Fork State Park Resort, for ex., is just two hours from Pittsburgh.

Seven unique family-oriented resorts are open year-round: Burr Oak, Hueston Woods, Mohican, Maumee Bay, Punderson Manor, Salt Fork and Shawnee. All feature the Great Outdoors, and some are on lakes; a couple have golf courses. Guests might stay in a lodge with indoor pool, or cottages in rolling hills.

Activities range from hiking to lake activities and swimming pools in summer, to snowmobiling, x-country skiing, skating, and ice-fishing in winter-time. Fall foliage in Ohio begins in mid-September, with 125 species of deciduous trees to make a color show.

Look for affordable family-friendly packages, that bundle together accommodations plus special activities. Salt Fork State Park Resort, for example, has offered packages that include a GPS unit for geocaching in the park. Punderson Manor State Park Resort is near Geauga Lake's Wildwater Kingdom waterpark. And several of the state park resorts have opportunities for horseriding.
