Why does Wisconsin Dells, population 4000, draw a steady stream of tourists year in and year out?
The answer is water parks: 19 resorts offer indoor water parks for their guests. And in summertime, many double the splashing with outdoor water parks too.
Lazy rivers, "interactive play zones" with squirters and showers, water play zones just for little kids-- Wisconsin Dells has it all, and without question has more waterslides per square mile than anywhere on earth.
The story goes that one resort first got the bright idea of building an indoor waterpark to draw visitors during the winter off-season months. Other resorts followed suit, and every year now brings giant expansions as one resort or another adds the longest waterslides, the highest, or the first ever to move uphill.
To give a few examples of Wisconsin Dells waterpark resorts:
The Great Wolf Lodge has two indoor waterpark areas, four stories tall. The Tree House waterpark extends over 12 levels, with spray guns, fountains, hoses, and a giant bucket at the top that spills water all over. Outdoors, in summer season the Thunder Bay waterpark has a 6000 sq. ft. water activity area and two 4-story waterslides. Great Wolf Lodge has opened indoor waterparks in many other parts of the US.
The Kalahari Resort is another giant place -- with claims to have "America's largest indoor waterpark"-- and it too has opened waterpark resorts elsewhere.
All this fun can be pretty affordable. For example, a summer season special at Great Wolf Lodge might be as low as $219/night for a Family Suite or Family Fireplace Suite, plus 4 passes to indoor and outdoor waterparks and more.
And as if all this weren't enough, Wisconsin Dells has several public outdoor waterparks, too.
