Ski (and snowboarding) holidays for Spring Break

Spring break can be a terrific time for a ski holiday: with milder temperatures, no icy slopes, longer daylight hours, and fewer crowds than during the Holiday Season. Below are some ideas about where to go.

Utah Ski Resorts: Salt Lake City may be as flat as, well, a salt lake. But within an hour's drive are no less than seven diverse ski resorts. Dozens of cities have direct flights to SLC, so visitors get not just great snow ("champagne powder") but also more time on the slopes.

Colorado, meanwhile, offers big name ski resorts, cute Victorian towns, and many nice features for families.

See more family ski resorts, by region. You may be able to reduce the high cost of skiing with Kids Ski Free deals: at Steamboat, in Colorado, for instance, kids up to age 12 can Ski Free with a parent or grandparent. And several airlines -- United, American, Northwest-- have Kids Fly Free deals for ski packages.

For a different kind of snow holiday:

YMCA of the Rockies, in Colorado, is a top-rated and affordable "family camp" with two giant centers, Snow Mountain Ranch and Estes Park Center. Packages include meals and lots of activities. Winter fun typically includes snowshoeing, sledding, campfire skits, ice-skating, indoor climbing wall, archery and swimming pool; horseback rides, sleigh rides and x-country skiing, at an extra charge.
