Like London, New York City is another great option if you're willing to say "who cares about the weather, we're going anyway."

About's Guide for NYC for Visitors has practical advice about visiting in January and February. For example: January is typically the coldest month, with an average high of 36°F (4°C) ; so bring along the hats, scarfs, and boots.

On the bright side are:

  • bargain accommodations and flights to New York City
  • better chances to get tickets to Broadway shows
  • discount dining during New York City Restaurant Week
  • ice-skating at Rockefeller Center, Central Park, and many other places
  • Chinese New Year Parade (probably in February)
  • great post-holiday sales at New York City stores
Speaking of stores... New York has some great stores that are fun to visit, even if you don't buy a thing. American Girl Place (with theatre and restaurant) ; a flagship Build-a-Bear Workshop; famous F.A.O. Schwarz; a gigantic Toys R Us in Times Square...
