Puerto Morelos
So close to tourist powerhouse Cancun, Puerto Morelos has -- somewhat miraculously-- survived as a laid-back small town; whereas Playa del Carmen, just a notch down the highway, has been utterly transformed by tourism.
Residents are savvy about the ecology of the nearby coral reef (-second largest barrier reef in the world) and potential environmental damages of development. So far, only one large resort has opened nearby.
If you're driving down the highway, stop in and shop for souvenirs around the sleepy town square; or book a snorkeling trip to the reef with one of Puerto Morelos' knowledgable guides.
Marina El Cid Riviera Maya Resort
Just south of Puerto Morelos, this all-inclusive opened in 2006 with a great location: just twenty minutes from the Cancun airport, and right next to the barrier coral reef. Guests should make sure to take a snorkeling trip.
Families like the huge freeform pool, where a waterplay zone has a waterslide and a cliff jump. Kids club takes ages 4 to 12.
Other features:
- all-suites resort, from "junior suites" to 3-bedroom
- marina, with sailing and snorkeling outings (extra charge)
- Platinum service adds ocean-view, special check-in, butler service, and a few more perks
