Blue Harbor Resort - background:

Blue Harbor Resort and Conference Center is located on Lake Michigan in the Harbor Center district of Sheboygan, Wisconsin. The style recalls grand old hotels of the late 19th century (-such as the Del Coronado.)

The Blue Harbor Resort has 183 guest suites, from 500 to 2,000 sq. ft. Condos are also available, in 4-unit cottages.

Other features: restaurants, tapa bar, Sweetshop cafe, fitness center, Aveda spa.

Most important for families is the 43,000 sq. ft. Breaker Bay indoor waterpark (see below.) Blue Harbor is part of "Great Wolf Lodges" which have resorts with indoor waterparks in Wisconsin Dells, Sandusky Ohio, and elsewhere.
As for Sheboygan:
Sheboygan--in central Wisconsin-- has beaches on Lake Michigan, and a Riverfront Boardwalk with shops and restaurants. In the refurbished downtown is a kids' museum, and a performing arts complex in the former Kohler (--think plumbing fixtures--) mansion. The town has outdoor Twilight Concerts in summertime.

Sheboygan Country has a state forest and resort community of Elkhart Lake. Golf and fishing are highlights. To the east, the town of Plymouth has a historic downtown with antiques etc.

What's special at Blue Harbor for families:
  • Breaker Bay Waterpark (see below)
  • Northern Lights Arcade
  • Crew Club supervised children's activity center
  • themed suites, including fun themes like Kid Aquarium (see photo) ; bunkbed suites for kids; fridges and microwaves; fireplaces in some suites
  • Lake Michigan beaches
  • outdoor pool and deck, in summer
  • family-friendly Sheboygan, with family-friendly eateries
Note: kids can join the Crew Club online at the web site, and get a free kids' meal and dessert if they stay at Blue Harbor in the month of their birthday.
Breaker Bay Water park:
  • 7 waterslides (three for kiddies)
  • 12 levels play structure, bridges, web crawls, fountains, spray guns, hoses, etc.
  • pools include kiddie pool and activity pool with basketball hoops and foam sea creatures
  • (small) lazy river with tubes
  • tipping ship dumps up to 1,000 gallons of water every five minutes
  • areas for ages 4 and under
  • Keep in mind about Blue Harbor:
    • the waterpark is small compared to some behemoths in Wisconsin Dells; teens may find it tame
    • don't forget Sheboygan: guests report that they enjoy the "small-town quaintness" of the place
    • the general public can buy admission to the waterpark
    • check for internet deals especially midweek
    • nice touch: Aveda toiletries
