A bus tour is a fun and easy way to learn about the city and its major landmarks, with the opportunity to get off whenever you like, tour a museum, explore the area, grab a meal, and then hop on another bus and continue sightseeing. Families with younger kids may especially appreciate the chance to take a load off, take a seat, and enjoy the ride. Meanwhile, the novelty of a double-decker bus is a kid-pleaser.

CitySights and Gray Line are two companies that operate these convenient tours, and each offers several itineraries. About.com's Guide for New York City Travel has a review of CitySights NY Hop-On, Hop-Off Tours that includes these tips:
  • Knowledgeable commentaries by tour guides are a big part of the experience, but some tour guides are better than others... If you're on a bus with a not-so-great guide, hop off and try another one
  • A two-day tour that includes a night tour may be the best value, and consider adding on a harbor cruise for a modest additional sum
  • Bring along a sweater of jacket, even on a warm day: it's breezy on the bus
Once you're oriented to the city and have discovered a few favorite parts of town, you can easily return using New York's great subway system.
