Northeast Summer Camps
An alternative to family resorts are "family camps", which typically have beautiful settings, simple lodgings, meals included, (probably in a dining hall), and many outdoors and other activities. Family camps can be economical and a wonderful getaway. Some kids' summer camps have family camps on certain weeks. (This page has good resources for kids camps too.)
NH: Mount Washington Resort, Bretton Woods
The century-old Mount Washington Hotel, built in the grand old style, is now part of the Bretton Woods ski resort. Features include 900-foot verandah, Kids Camp, outdoor activities, seasonal events such as Thanksgiving weekends. Other lodging at Bretton Woods include an Inn that's National Historic Landmark, as is the Hotel.
CT: Sunrise Resort
A 400-acre spread, open summer months only, with all-inclusive pricing: three meals daily; lodging; activities and entertainment. Kids programs; lots of activities; day visitors are welcome.
CT: Interlaken Inn
the Interlaken Inn --on 30 acres in Lakeville CT, in the Litchfield Hills-- is over a century old and prides itself on New England country ambiance. Watch for seasonal packages for families.
MA: Winnetu Oceanside Resort, Martha's Vineyard
This "casually upscale" resort was named one the "10 Best Family-Friendly Resorts in the U.S." Location is a short walk from one of the island's best beaches; a shuttle service or a bike ride takes guests to Edgartown, a busy village with boutiques, galleries, and historic homes.
MA: Cape Codder Resort
On Cape Cod, 95 miles from Boston, 245 from New York, the Cape Codder Resort and Spa has an 8200 sq.ft. indoor water complex, with wave pool, water slides, waterfall, etc.
MA: Red Jacket Beach Resort, Cape Cod
