Mexico is a favorite place for a sun 'n' beach getaway, and certainly the Riviera Maya is famous for this -- see links for all-inclusives, right.
But this area, on the Caribbean south of Cancun, also offers much more.
Fly into Cancun's airport, and head south down the highway to "The Riviera Maya" ( --though be warned, this highway offers no view of the nearby coast.)
You'll find:
- second largest barrier reef in the world;
- beautiful lagoons that are perfect places for a child to learn to snorkel;
- a unique eco-archeological theme park called Xcaret--not to be missed, and a more natural park with activities, Xel-ha;
- and further south: cenotes (natural pools of clear water-- swimmable) ; caves; and Mayan ruins
The Mayan ruins --at Tulum, by the sea, and Coba, inland-- can turn your holiday into a learning vacation for everyone in the family.
