Thirty-seven Yeoman Warders -- also called "Beefeaters"-- live at the Tower, as its guards: a tradition that goes back to King Henry VIII's bodyguards, established in 1485.
Their clothing is a subject of great interest. The Yeomen chatting above are wearing their blue "undress" uniform, dating from Queen Victoria's time. Better known are the opulent scarlet and gold dress uniforms -- think Beefeater Gin ads-- which date from 1552.
Visitors take note: the Yeoman Warders lead tours throughout the day.
