Tower of London: Photos and Tips for Visiting

The Tower of London -- "The Royal Fortress on the Thames" -- was started by William the Conqueror almost 1000 years ago, when he built the White Tower on the site of a Roman fort. Other kings added smaller towers, and walls around the central keep; the term "Tower of London" refers to the whole complex.

The tops of the turrets of the White Tower can be glimpsed in the back; these are actually 90 ft. tall.
