Shakespeare's Globe Theatre sits on a prime spot in Bankside on south side of the Thames River. Right by it is a wide walkway for strolling by the river.
The original Globe was built in Bankside in 1599, for William Shakespeare's company of players; many of his greatest plays were performed there. But in 1613, a stage cannon set fire to the thatched roof, and the theatre burned to the ground. A second Globe was built, but was closed in 1642, along with all other theatres, by England's Puritans, and was demolished soon afterwards.
Today's reconstructed theatre lies about 200 yards from the site of the original Globe Theatre? What's the story behind the reconstruction? Read on.
