Most tourists visit Trafalgar Square, sometimes called "The Heart of the City", built to honor Admiral Nelson's victory at the Battle of Trafalgar, and famous for its four giant bronze lions and thousands of pigeons. In the background above is the National Gallery (free, by the way, as are many wonderful London museums.)
Trafalgar Square is a prime spot for Christmas celebrations, with giant Norwegian Christmas Tree (sent by Norway every year), and nightly carols. See more about Trafalgar Square Christmas Carols; attendance is free.
