The iPod, the iTouch, and the iPad (especially with 3G wireless access) can be invaluable for family travelers, thanks to the hundreds of travel applications -- "apps"-- available free or at a modest price. On a recent trip to NYC, the subway map and Urbanspoon for restaurants were two (free) apps we loved instantly.
Some recommendations here at About.com include: apps for public transport, sightseeing, free WiFi, from our Vancouver Guide; Top iPhone Travel Apps, including a free flashlight and a flight tracker; and a Time Travel Explorer London map that shows the city in centuries past.
Important point, about travel apps: Look for apps that download fully, with no need for further data access while being used. Travelers need to watch out for roaming charges! And iPad users want to minimize the volume of "paid" data sent using a wireless data plan.
Apps for Traveling Families
Some apps are especially handy for traveling families.
- SitOrSquat locates public washrooms. This app finds your current location using the GPS locator built into the iPhone and iPad.
- iTriage: two emergency room physicians created this app for travelers who get sick or injured away from home. iTriage locates doctors, clinics, and hospital emergency rooms, using your device's built-in GPS.
- Useful Walt Disney World iPhone Apps-- for park hours, dining, map, wait times, and more.
Do you have an app you think is great for travel? It's easy to share!
