The Rose Hall Great House -- on Jamaica's north coast, about 20 minutes from Montego Bay-- is perhaps the finest example in Jamaica of a restored "Great House" that presided over a vast plantation in colonial times.
Rose Hall was built by a wealthy Englishman, John Palmer, in 1770. In those days, Jamaica had more than 700 "great houses" built high so that owners could overlook their vast holdings. Rose Hall was surrounded by a 6600-acre sugar plantation, with more than 2000 slaves.
Today, Rose Hall Great House is famous for several reasons. The interiors have been sumptuously restored, and tours are offered. Several resorts, the White Witch Golf Course, and other development properties are all centered around Rose Hall. And most famously, Rose Hall is the home of the legendary "White Witch", Annie Palmer. Visitors who tour the Great House will learn about the "White Witch of Rose Hall"...
