Book early for Spring Break, especially if there's 5 of you!

When November rolls around, it's time to start thinking about spring break and Easter vacations, especially if you've got in mind a stay at an all-inclusive beach resort.

Spring Break usually means ten days off school; dates vary in different parts of the country, but typically fall mid-March to mid-April. (And it's a good thing that dates do vary: imagine the crowds at Disney World if all schools took Spring Break the same week.)

Spring Break Alternatives
An argument can be made for taking your family getaway at a time that's not in the crowded Spring Break weeks. VacationKids.com founder Sally Black has plenty of experience trying to book family stays at popular resorts that are maxed out during peak spring weeks. Her advice: try these alternative times for family getaways.

  • Martin Luther King day (mid-January): Many school districts tag on an extra day or two for teachers' meetings/ professional days. This is a good chance to enjoy a pre-spring break getaway during Caribbean high season, without paying the REALLY high season prices.
  • Presidents Day (mid-February): Many school districts give kids the entire week off. Book early; and hotel rates are at a premium.
  • Easter (March or April): many Christian/parochial schools take their spring break during Easter week. Again, expect high prices and plan ahead.
