Vero Beach is in southeast Florida on the "Treasure Coast" (so named because of treasure found from numerous shipwrecks.) The Treasure Coast today has beautiful beaches, surfing, coral reef in some areas, and revived downtowns.
Disney's Vero Beach Resort -- 71 acres on a barrier island, with inn, villas and beachfront cottages-- is in the style of "Old Florida" grand beach hotels.
The property operates as an upscale hotel and is also part of Disney's timeshare Vacation Club.
Location is about two hours drive SE from Orlando, and quite a few guests arrive for a rest after busy days at the theme parks. Meanwhile, driving time north from Miami is 3 hours; nearest airport is Melbourne, and an airport shuttle serves the property.

daily paper keeps you informed about activities

Keep in Mind:
you'll have to take a short drive if you want to eat off-property. (Nearest town is Vero Beach.)
Beach Cottage villas have 3 bedrooms and can sleep a large family, but may be hard to book especially if you're not a Vacation Club member
this is a low-key place, focussed on the beach; don't expect the razzle-dazzle of Disney World
expect to pay extra for beach chairs etc.
no-see-ums! Bring bug repellants
