Space Coast: affordable area just an hour from Orlando, with a major attraction of its own, the Kennedy Space Center. The Space Coast has long stretches of beaches; estuaries and nature refuges; you may have to share beaches with college spring-breakers, though.
Everglades National Park: a very different Florida, light-years away from theme parks and busy beaches, and yet only a few hours south of Miami by car; a World Heritage Site, and International Biosphere Reserve. Camp or try a houseboat stay.
Amelia Island: northeast Florida; giant Amelia Island Plantation resort; family-friendly luxury at Ritz Carlton; beaches, nature outings, historic fort.
Daytona Beach: the town synonymous with wild college spring break has an annual Family Beach Break program, mid March to May, with packages at family-type hotels and nice freebies. Expect to share the town and beach with spring-breakers, though.
The Breakers, Palm Beach: this landmark hotel welcomes families.
St. Petersburg/ Clearwater Beach: on the west coast; top-rated beaches; nature outings, pirate cruises; affordable. Expect spring-breakers, though.
Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort: in northwest Florida; big beach, big bay; picture-perfect village.
