2. VA: The Homestead - Holiday Season

The Homestead is a Virginia mountain resort with centuries of history: host to "Presidents, Princes, and sports enthusiasts" since it's founding in 1766. Seasonal activities range from horseback riding to sporting clays, fly fishing, falconry, mountain biking. Winter sports include skiing on nine runs, x-country skiing, snow-tubing, and more. Kids and teen programs too -- and lots of special holiday season festivities.

3. WV: White-Water Rafting

West Virginia is considered a prime place for rafting during summer months, and many companies offer family rafting trips.
