From coast to coast, kids will enjoy Canada's Great Outdoors and also the theme parks, children's museums, and other attractions that make city visits fun.
About's Guide for Canada Travel covers the country far and wide. Below are some highlights, and reviews.
Let's start with skiing:
Whistler-Blackcomb Ski Resort, BC
Site of the 2010 Olympics, Whister-Blackcomb (near Vancouver) has two giant mountains, special kids areas, daycare, adventure camps, and stays open through May. (Whistler is popular in summer too.)
Sun Peaks Ski Resort - Okanagan BC
Sometimes, the non-celebrity ski resorts can be star-quality, with uncrowded slopes, lower prices, manageable size, and some darn good home-grown talent, i.e. great snow. The Okanagan area has "champagne powder", three mountains, handy little village, and lots of off-slope snow fun.
Vancouver Island whale-watching: Gray whales migrate past Tofino on their way from Alaska to Mexico in the fall, and back again in spring.
Quebec City Winter Carnival
Quebec City is delightful in summertime and fall, but perhaps the best time to visit is in winter, when -- for two weeks-- the city joyously celebrates the world's largest winter carnival.
Ice Hotel --photos
A place of other-worldly beauty that you can experience as a day-guest on a guided tour. The Ice Hotel is about an hour's drive from Quebec City; dates are approx. January to April.
Montreal Jazz Festival
Montreal is a wonderful city to visit in summer, and if you arrive in late June and early July you can take in the world-class Jazz Festival-- and so can your kids. Thousands of 'em romp daily in a gigantic play zone with giant piano keys, a slide like a trumpet, arts, crafts, clowns, etc. A special Little School of Jazz show teaches kids about jazz music by using familiar kiddie songs.
