Waikiki Beach is a fine place to learn, with plenty of surfing history: surfing was the sport of Hawaiian royalty; Waikiki was home base of legendary Duke Kahanamoku, who took surfing worldwide; not to mention the "Waikiki beach boys" of Hawaii's heydey as a tourist spot. Also, Waikiki's a popular and easy destination for families.
This summer, the Hilton Hawaiian Village -- the most resort-like of the hotels along Waikiki Beach-- has a "Surf's Up" Package built around the release of "Surf's Up", an animated penguin surf comedy opening June 8. Package runs May 1 through Sept. 30 2007; rates start at $219/night and include 20% discount on surf lessons for two, 20% discount on spa treatments, and Surf's Up souvenir.
