The Ramp: Club Med Punta Cana

Family travel had a strong 2005: not only is it a powerful engine in the travel sector, it's also a scene of wild inventiveness. Resorts add cartoon hosts and on-site waterparks; theme parks add resorts with kids' clubs; Halloween is now a full-blown season of haunted hayrides and Boos at Zoos --- who knew 10 years ago that all this was in store?

Below are a few family travel news-makers of in '05 (also coming on strong in 2006.)

Club Med: The Ramp

Club Med is a leader in family all-inclusives, with awesome kids' programs and facilities. Now, the company's tackling that hardest age to please: teenagers. To do so, it moved its thinking way out of the box and invented The Ramp, which debuted in April at Club Med Punta Cana: with a slope for roller-boarding, skateboarding, or hanging out; a deck on top with seats and giant hammock; a lounge area tucked underneath the deck; and above it all, a sail-like canopy that doubles as a movie screen. There are plans to Ramp up Club Med Sandpiper (in Florida), and Club Med Ixtapa in Mexico.
