Sled Dogs, Close-up
- photos of a half-day dog sled excursion, Banff, Alberta

By , About.com Guide

Each of us first-time dog-sledders instantly admired these beautiful and spirited animals, and felt that our own sled dogs were the very best.

Our excursion was with Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours, a family-run business. Snowy Owl uses a variety of breeds of dogs. Above: the ginger and white husky is a pure bred Siberian Male named Cowboy, and the mainly white female laying down -- named Snowflake-- is a pure bred Canadian Inuit Husky (closest living relative to the Arctic wolf).

Other breeds at Snowy Owl include: Canadian Indian Husky (closest relative to the coyote, though looks like a shepherd cross); Alaskan Husky (used for racing); and Alaskan Malamute, usually a larger fluffier dog. See pictures of all at the Snowy Owl site.
