Summer Vacations: Learning Adventures

By , About.com Guide

What a combo, for a summer vacation: spectactular Great Outdoors; active and engaging activities for kids; and a big dollop of learning flavored as fun.

Family Adventures, in general, aim to provide a mix of: fabulous location; fun activities; and learning-as-fun. However many of these small-group adventure vacations for families are high-end, with deluxe lodgings and dining, for instance, and special outings such as white-water rafting that all contribute to a higher cost.

Below are several suggestions for lower-cost adventure vacations for families, in unique settings, with fun stuff to do.

Summer Adventure Vacations for Families

  • Crow Canyon Archeological Center, Colorado:
one-week family camp for the whole family; "no experience necessary". Hands-on activities introduce your family to the practice of archaeology and to the history of the Anasazi, the ancestral Pueblo Indians. And yes, you do actually get to dig-- alongside real archaeologists at an ancient Pueblo Indian site. Nature hike, storytelling, lots more.

Price includes three home-cooked meals a day, and lodgings on the Center's 170-acre campus in log cabins built in the style of Native American hogans. (Showers and toilets are adjacent.)

Note: 2006 program is full, but you can call and get on a waiting list; who knows, perhaps they'll add another week!
