Introduction to the DR: getting there (airport locations, direct flights), best beach areas for all inclusive resorts, attractions and fun outings. For starters: Punta Cana, in the east on the Caribbean sea, has long beautiful beaches; the North Coast has choppier seas but is fun for boogie boarding, surfing, windsurfing.

2. Club Med Punta Cana All Inclusive Resort

This giant property has 75 acres and a long stretch of white-sand beach. Features include amazing kids programs for different age groups, including Petit Club Med for 2 - 3 year olds; The Ramp, for teens; trapeze, a signature Club Med activity; inline skating; watersports with instruction; Crunch Fitness; Hip Hop Kidz; and many more activities. But perhaps the outstanding feature of Club Med is its unique friendly ambiance thanks to GO's.

3. Barcelo Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

The Barceló brand has resorts world-wide, including a bunch in Mexico and the DR. This one has a beautiful beach location, a large lagoon-style pool and a kids' pool with slides and water park features; mini-club for ages 4 to 12; trapeze, soccer field, "ice skating".

4. Sun Village All Inclusive Resort

Sun Village Resort is a family-friendly, mid-sized all inclusive resort in Cofresi on the north coast of the DR. The marine park Ocean World is next door; restaurants, shops, nightlife in Playa Dorado and Puerto Plata are not far away. Left: kids pool with water slide is right by the kids' club.

5. Viva Wyndham Tangerine- All Inclusive Resort

Well-priced all-inclusive with great location on the north coast of the DR, just a short walk along the beach from the town of Cabarete. Check prices

6. Casa de Campo (Not an All Inclusive Resort)

The name means "country house", but don't let that humble moniker fool you: this is a prominent DR resort with many villas and residences, 7000 acres, equestrian center, 16th century Italian village (!), kids' programs, famous golf course, polo. Many activities for kids and families. Not an all inclusive resort, but with this size and stature, it deserves a mention; also, inclusive packages may be available.

7. Breezes Puerto Plata All Inclusive Resort

This resort is part of the Breezes brand of SuperClubs all-inclusives; location is on the North Coast, half an hour from Puerto Plata airport. Features include: miniclub for kids; meandering freeform pool; trapeze, rock-climbing wall, kayaks, boogie boards, soccer field, tennis, 9-hole pitch'n'putt, etc., and other activities; daily shuttles to Cabarete and Sosua. Value-priced with promotions (- look for Kids Free pricing.)

8. Natura Park Eco-Resort & Spa

In the Punta Cana area; features lush landscaping, ponds, open-air restaurants, and decor with local stones, coconut, and cane. Mini-Club for ages 2 to 12. Kids like seeing peacocks, ducks, flamingos, roaming the grounds or in the lagoons.

9. Lots More All Inclusive Resorts in the DR

All Inclusive Resorts have been built at a fast and furious place in the Dominican Republic in recent years, especially in the Punta Cana area in the southeast of the island. About.com's Guide for Caribbean Travel has a long list of all inclusive resorts, most of which welcome families.

10. Explore the Dominican Republic

Be sure to also explore the DR outside your all inclusive resort: go horse-riding, take a safari tour, try surfing or even kite-boarding.

11. Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach

This resort is on the southeastern coast of the DR, on a half-mile sugar-white beach bordering parkland, 17 miles from the La Romana airport. Kids club for ages 4 to 12, Junior's Club for ages 12 to 16; activities include windsurfing, sailing, archery, snorkeling right at the beach.
