Dominican Republic - North Coast

Horse-riding, white-water rafting, canyoning

Horse-riding is fun for all ages: whether you ride on the beach or in the mountains.

White-water rafting is another terrific outing. Several companies offer rafting trips out of the mid-island town of Jarabacoa. A run on the Río Yaque del Norte offers plenty of zip; not for young kids, though. Calmer trips are available.

Also: for teens and adults in good shape, "canyoning" in the Damajagua waterfalls area is a unique adventure. Expect to do jumping, sliding, climbing, rappelling... A tour company will lead you on this adventure, and provide gear, helmet, and watershoes. The IguanaMama adventure company (based in Cabarete) has approval for a dozen of the waterfalls; other companies offer canyoning at other waterfalls too.
