Sosua -- between Puerta Plata and Cabarete -- is a town where tourists can stroll around sampling restaurants and shops; it's also a jumping-off point for snorkeling excursions.
Several dive shops near the beach will take you on a short boat ride to a cluster of coral outcroppings; the modest $15/price is about right for the trip, as the coral is not extensive; but there are fishies to be seen and the outing could be nice for kids.
