My son and I had a great trip to Disney World with a first-time visitor and it was fun to work out an "absolutely must do this!" list. Some might say that twenty items is long for a "Must Do" list but they may not realize that (a) Disney World has four gigantic theme parks and (b) in addition to rides, Disney World also has wonderful musical shows, fireworks, parades, and other special events. So on to our personal best list of top attractions and things to do... (and please share your own favorite attractions at Disney World
1. Magic Kingdom: Splash Mountain
This classic attraction is one of the most popular, and it's utterly quirky: you might think it's about a huge drop on a log flume ride (above), but actually most of the ride meanders past figures of Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, and other animatronic characters, to the tune of a silly song about a Laughing Place, with a "Zip-ee-dee-do-dah" finale -- check it all out in this video
that takes you through all the details. (And the big chute drop is
a lot of fun.)
Splash Mountain is in the Frontierland area of the Magic Kingdom, where you'll also find:
2. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
This was one son's favorite ride at a certain age and we must've riden it a dozen times on one trip. With its train and Wild West themes and top speed of 36 mph, Thunder Mountain is a just-right ride for younger kids. (As for Splash Mountain, kids only need to be 40 inches tall to ride.) You can watch a video
at the Disney World site.
3. Space Mountain
The third "mountain coaster" in Magic Kingdom is in the Tomorrowland area
. This is a dark coaster and feels more intense the other two, though in fact the speed is only 27 mph. Height requirement is 44 inches.
Disney World added a fourth "mountain coaster" in Animal Kingdom
, but let's stick with the must-do attractions in Magic Kingdom for now...
