Just 15 minutes from Atlantia, 3200-acre Stone Mountain Park is Georgia's top tourist draw, combining natural attractions -- lakes, woods, and the world's largest granite outcrop, carved with the world's largest sculpture -- plus amusements such as scenic railroad, sky ride, riverboat, play zones, and a laser light show. (Read more about Stone Mountain Park.) Real snow begins December 11 (2011).
During the Holiday Season, the Park has Stone Mountain Christmas: open on select dates from mid-November to just after the New Year, and featuring Christmas carols, a parade with floats, holiday characters and Santa Claus, light displays with more than 2M lights, and more than a dozen performances and activities. Expect crowds! The Polar Express 4D Experience is a 3D movie with "4D" surprises such as bursts of wind or drops of rain -- note that this Polar Express is not a train ride. Stone Mountain Park does have a train, which runs around the base of Stone Mountain; at Christmas, it passes by light displays and stops for a traditional Christmas story. Sleigh Ride Musical Review and A Crossroads Christmas Carol are other features of Stone Mountain Christmas. New in 2011 is a Snow Angel Palace and a Holly Jolly Cabaret show.
Also part of the Holiday Season fun is Snow Mountain: the region's only snow park, with tubings, snowball zone, and other play areas, open late December to early March.*
See the Stone Mountain Park site for details. Families can buy a Christmas Family Value Pass (four Stone Mountain Christmas tickets, four meals and unlimited hot chocolate); price in 2010 was $119. Families can also stay right at the park with hotel packages.
