This laid-back small-size resort has a great location for families who love snorkeling and underwater life and don't mind traveling beyond the usual playgrounds.
Belize is the small country with Caribbean beaches just south of Mexico's Yucatan; flight time from Miami is about two hours. Divers and snorkelers are drawn to Belize by the second-largest Barrier Reef in the world, and Ambergris Caye is a prime place to enjoy it. This tiny island is less than half a mile wide and 13 miles long; has a small town, San Pedro; a walking path along the beach; and very few motor vehicles.
Journey's End Resort has 50 acres and 48 units, including beachfront cabanas, rooms in a small hotel-style building, and a 3-bedroom villa. Units have A/C but many guests prefer the ceiling fans and breezes.
Low-key, relaxed, and laid-back: that's the sort of place this is; it's also a place with no tv's in the rooms.
Activities include:
- hobie cats, kayaking
- swimming at the shallow beach
- paddle one of the complimentary kayaks for 10-15 minutes, and snorkel at a reef with colorful underwater life
- possible outings include snorkel/diving trips to nearby reefs and marine parks; lagoon tour; jungle river tour plus Mayan ruins; and even a flight into Guatamala to see famous Mayan ruins at Tikal.
- for divers, there's a dive shop on-site, and many diving spots are 15 minutes away, or less
- gratuities are added to meals automatically
- meal plans are available, for a more "all-inclusive" experience
- reportedly there's a lot of eelgrass at the shore
