Yellowstone National Park: geothermal features
Mammoth Hot Springs Terraces
Below is a view of my personal star attraction among Yellowstone's many natural wonders. Just a short walk from the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel are the Mammoth Hot Springs Terraces.
For info about the Mammoth Hot Spring Terraces see the Yellowstone National Park website. The terraces are formed by heated water which bubbles up and flows over the surfaces (and gives them a sparkling quality.) The hot water contains calcium and bicarbonate which combine at the surface and get deposited as "travertine". Fresh travertine is white in color, then changes to gray over time. Colors are sometimes added by bright bacteria and algae, making the terraces one of the most beautiful sights in the Park.
