Walt Disney World lodgings: Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge | |

Every afternoon, you can take a tour of the Lodge with a guide who's a "cultural representative" from Africa. Our gracious guide is on the right.
What you see above is, incredibly, a mask-- the Igbo Ijele Mask, created by the Igbo people in Nigeria-- meant to be worn during an important village ceremony. In times of trouble, the inhabitants of a particular village would create this marvelous piece of art which has a very applied purpose: the strongest man in the village would be picked to wear it and successfully perform a dance. As the mask is extremely heavy, the chosen man was under great pressure to perform well.
