Atlanta
Atlanta is one of the country's fastest-growing cities; its sleek airport helps it welcome 17M visitors a year.
- In
Atlanta, the neighborhood where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. grew up is now a
National Historic Site managed by the
National Park Service to "protect and interpret the places where Dr. King was born, worked,
worshipped and is buried."
For kids at this Historic Site, there's a Junior Ranger program for ages 9 to 12. Usually, with these National Park programs, kids complete activities in a booklet and get a special patch, but in this case they also agree to live by Dr. King's Six Principles of Nonviolence.
- at the African American Panoramic Experience
(APEX) Museum, the Trolley Theatre shows videos about
African American
experiences, including children's shows. Temporary exhibits bring to life
aspects of black history. Also at the Museum, visit the Yates
and Milton Drug Store:
"...one of Atlanta's first Black owned businesses. Hear the stories of early African American pioneers in Atlanta. Learn about the powerful Black Families that helped to make Atlanta great. See things from an era gone, and items that have transcended through time."
- For little kids, try the storytelling -- with local dialect and traditions-- at The Wren's Nest, the Victorian home of the author of the Uncle Remus, Br'er Rabbit stories. Read about the Wren's Nest at GoCityKids
- Atlanta also has a bunch of childrens' museums; for these and other kid-friendly activities, check GoCityKids.
