Six more vacation ideas for spring break.

  • Kohala Coast, Hawaii
If you feel like lapping up a little luxury en famille, consider this group of eight resorts on the west side of the Big Island. 38,000 Conde Nast readers voted the resort hotels along the Kohala Coast among the “Top Fifty Tropical Resorts Worldwide." Read about two Kohala Coast Resorts: Kona Village Resort and the Hilton Waikoloa Village, and what they offer families.

  • US Virgin Islands
Two hours southeast of Miami,  the US Virgin Islands offer a Caribbean experience that's still part of the US. Three distinct islands-- sleepy , bustling St. Thomas, and eco-treat St. John-- offer white-sand beaches, super snorkeling, a major National Park, colonial towns and forts, duty-free shops, and novel ways to explore the underseas-- such as sea-trekking.

  • Florida:  up close with manatees
If you've ever longed to see these fascinating shy creatures (also called "sea cows", and actually related to the elephant), here's a few of the best places in Florida to see, and even swim and snorkel with, manatees in the wild. "Manatee season" is from November to March.
  • Florida Everglades
November to March is also the top time to visit the Florida Everglades: wildlife viewing is best, and also, starting in April, insects can make visits uncomfortable especially for little kids.
Everglades National Park is less than an hour south of Miami, and is a unique ecosystem where you'll see alligators, lots of birdlife, maybe even a manatee (-though be warned that it's very difficult to spot these creatures in the darkish waters of the Everglades.)
Read about visiting Everglades National Park, at Travel With Kids.
  • California: Monterey Bay
Monterey Bay, south of San Francisco, is a popular tourist spot, and deservedly so: home to Cannery Row (made famous in John Steinbeck's novel), Fisherman's Wharf, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and a host of sea mammals such as sea lions, harbor seals, sea otters, and gray whales. The legendary Big Sur Coast is a short scenic drive away. Where to stay? There's many family- and budget-friendly spots, but for a splurge consider the
Five Star Diamond Monterey Plaza Hotel and Spa that literally sits upon the Bay. Rooms start at $195/night, and kids under 18 stay free.
