World Trade Center: The Sphere
|
| |
| Amazingly this sculpture,
The Sphere, survived the Sept. 11 catastrophe at the World Trade Center. The sculpture was created in 1971 by a German artist, Fritz Koenig, as a
monument to world peace through trade; it sat on a
fountain at the center of a 5-acre plaza.
|

| Now, it waits in
Battery Park as a temporary memorial for the 2,801 people
who died that day plus the six who perished during the 1993 bombing. Later
it will be placed at the rebuilt World Trade Center site, probably as a
center-piece. |
