Rose Hall Great House

photos - Rose Hall Great House, p. 2

When we visited the Rose Hall Great House, we were escorted on a tour by a well-trained guide, who not only showed the beautifully restored rooms but also recounted the grisly tale of the White Witch of Rose Hall-- not recommended for young kids!

The tale is grisly on two counts: the first being the horrible cruelty of Annie Palmer, the mistress of Rose Hall, toward her slaves. Details such as a bear trap (on view in the "dungeon") used to trap errant slaves could easily upset a child.

Rose Hall Great House: where White Witch is buried

Then there's the story of Annie Palmer herself... who allegedly murdered three husbands in their beds before being murdered herself in 1831, by the last of her slave lovers. This story is a fabrication; yet there is a deeper truth about the cruelty of the ruling class of the day.
