Rose Hall Great House |
|
The Rose Hall Great House -- on Jamaica's north coast, about 20 minutes from Montego Bay-- is perhaps the finest example in Jamaica of a Great House from the colonial times. Several resorts, the White Witch Golf Course, and other development properties are centered around Rose Hall.
Rose Hall was built by a wealthy Englishman in 1750. In those days, Jamaica had more than 700 "great houses" built high so that owners could overlook their vast holdings. Rose Hall was surrounded by a 6600-acre sugar plantation, with more than 2000 slaves.
