Amelia Island Plantation Resort
Guests of the Plantation Resort can hike or bike seven miles of nature trails-- or take one of the many tours offered by the on-site Nature Center (priced at $7.50 for adults, $5 for kids 4-12.) My son was fascinated by the heron nests right on the Plantation's grounds.

Best of all, perhaps, are the boardwalks that extend right into the marsh.

Amelia River Cruises (904-261-9972) offers tours of the Amelia River, the wetlands and Cumberland Sound. The 49-passenger Ryan-K is covered and has restrooms on board. | |
Out on the water, the shrimp boats have a wing-ed sort of beauty and dolphins can be spotted when the nets are being hoisted up. If you're lucky you'll spot the wild horses on Cumberland Island.
