The word "villa" carries with it a certain grandeur--  the sort of place, say, where Cary Grant might have wooed Grace Kelly.

Holidayers should be aware, however, that nowadays the term "villa" is widely used for any vacation home-- in fact, for any free-standing vacation unit-- in a sunny clime.

Villa rentals in Europe tend to fall into two main types: large luxurious  places that often sleep ten or more; and the more modest lodgings typically found with package holidays.

Either type suits families.  The high-end villas often have pools, and can even be economical if shared with another family. Meanwhile, the more modest villas are usually attractive, and are preferable to hotels because they're roomier and have kitchen facilities.

There are three main ways to end up in a sun-bleached villa near the Mediterranean.

  • Air/villa package companies-- flying from major cities such as London
  • Companies that specialize in villa rentals
  • Vacation Home Rentals Websites which list properties that you can rent directly from the owners.

Eye on the budget?
At first glance, one might think that renting a place directly from its owner is a fast track to bargain-land. However,  many such villas are large, expensive properties; and even lesser places are often priced for  "whatever-the- market-will-bear".

If you can be content with smaller lodgings and can fly out of the UK, try booking an air/villa package. Package-holiday companies often offer last-minute bargains. If you're interested only in the villa rental, you might be able to arrange a land-only deal.
